if you plan on using an ASIO
(audio streaming input output) driver I don't think it's possible to run two sound cards. but if you're using another driver form than i think you can choose the input and output source from two different cards. but don't take that statement as law or anything because i haven't tried it.

you can use more than 1 card at a time depending on the type of card it is.. i use a midiman audiophile 2496 and you can have up to 4 of those in a system... basically as long as the cards work in your system then they will work in cubase and you can select which card input you want to use on the audio track. to set up which inputs and outputs are available you have to go to the ASIO multimedia setup under 'start/programs/steinberg cubase sx/' (there is also a directx setup and i think depending on whether you are using asio or directx determines which one you should run). anyway, when you run the setup thing you can select which inputs and outputs are available for use in cubase sx as well as setting up the buffer sizes for each sample rate etc. etc..
there are a lot of cards that will work with 2 in a system, but sometimes it won't, like a lot of soundblaster cards act crazy if you have more than 2 in a system, but its always worth a shot....
edit: also, to make sure you have the right driver chosen go to the devices menu in cubase and go to 'device setup' and i think its under 'vst multitrack' where you select the driver.
hope you get it figured out,
