This might seem elementary but what is the difference between active and passive studio speakers? I'm assuming that it's the type of sound that comes out like a flat vs. stereo sound or something like that. But any help would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone know a good brand of monitor speaker/s, but not too expensive? Maybe in the 100-200 range.

peace and thanks,

Active monitors are powered, passive are not. Passive monitors are usually less expensive but you need an amp to power them. When buying monitors you're trying to basically find the ones with the flatest response. This means the monitor is reproducing the music exactly the way it sounds. Alesis makes some pretty decent monitors in the low price range. Roland also has some pretty cheap passive monitors that are ok. I'd also recomend buying a decent sub so you can feel the bottom end of your mixes. If your monitors are subbing your bass is probably too loud! :)
