I am going to georgia tech right now doing computer science, but its not what i want to do. So, i am going to change that and the school im looking into is Full Sail in Orlando. If i go, i will be doing the recording arts degree program. I was just wondering if and what anybody has heard about it (all i have heard is good stuff so far). Also, i was wondering if anyone has heard of any other schools that are as good or better than Full Sail for doing recording / producing type stuff. thanks for your help.

Only the VERY best school for recording and what not there is AROUND!!!!!!
VERY VERY VERY expensive, but Im sure it will pay off in the end.
The program isn't THAT long on a "study period" per say. However, you are basically on call 24 hours a day.
If they page you at 3 am to come into the "studio", you have to get up and go......and stay until you are done. EVEN if you have class at 9am. It's VERY demanding - I have some friends that go there. They will put you in real situations that you would face in a real studio once you graduate.
Be prepared to be broke though, b/c like I said, you are on call 24 hours a day, so, NO JOB can really be held while you attend.
But it will for sure pay off in the end. THIS is a WONDERFUL school, and if you can afford it and make your way through the demanding program, GO FOR IT. YOu will not regret it.

I would look into Middle Tennessee State University (www.mtsu.edu) for your recording education...Being that you are in a state school right now, you might be able to get candidacy really easy...It is cheaper and more likely to get a job coming off of graduation...I have a friend that is currently enrolled there for the recording industry...He always does a ton of research into anything he does, so if he went to MTSU instead of Full Seal, it must be a really good school...

Yea, the Recording Art Program at Full Sail is at least $35 grand. But once you graduate, you'll make that back within the next year or so working. They have good job placement obviously.

OK. I went to full sail this weekend for the tour and that place kicks some major ass. i've been into music my whole life and recording/computer audio for about 4 years now and i was totally blown away by the place. they have got the most insane gear i have ever seen and they have TONS of it. there are labs all over the place full of gear and you are allowed to touch all of it. for example, they let us into the studio where creed recorded "human clay" and they were letting people on the tour mess with the 1.2 MILLION dollar console in the control room for the studio... and these aren't even students yet... Anyway. im 99.9999% im going there probably starting as soon as this semster is over and anyone who is interested in any sort of entertainment media field i would recommend checking out full sail because it has THE top of the line gear and you actually get to use it unlike most schools where they teach you about the gear but you arent allowed to touch it. oh yeah, the list of projects full sail graduates have worked on is amazing (all kinds of really famous movies, albums, games, webpages, tours, grammy award winning stuff etc...). needless to say im excited about it.

I'm a current student at Full Sail and here are some facts you may want to know about the school. There are good points and obviously bad ones as well. I don't know exactly what you expect to learn there but if you're wanting to learn production skills and the creative aspects, I don't think this the right place. You can learn a lot of technical elements of recording but you'll have to waste a lot of time doing so. The first 3 months are crap. For you MUST take 3 core classes that didnt do shit for me. I see you go to Georgia Tech. If you're planning to be qualified for working in recording studios, I would suggest you moving your credits over the Middle Tenessee State and enrolling in their Recording program. It would be much cheaper and would create better opportunities for you in places such as Nashville. So many dumbasses have given Full Sail Grads a bad rep that hardly anyone will hire a student right out of Full Sail other than those shitty intern gigs. In the end you will have learned a lot. Thats not the question. The question is the money(30+ grand for tuition, 10-15 grand for living expenses), and time that you have to put into it. A year, going to labs at all times of the night (1-5am, 5-9am, etc) will kill you. But it is a good school depending on what you put into it. I thought I would let you know what my opinions on the school.

ez
PS- Don't plan on working while you're in school.

Full sail is an incredible school and from all accounts the best as far as getting a degree in that field. If i were you id stay at tech transfer into the dupree school of managment. Finish up your degree and take the money you would have spent on full sail and buy yourself as much of a studio as you can. With enough drive you can learn just about everything you would in a homebuilt studio as you would at full sail. Most grads have a bad rep lately and are having a hard time finding job placement. I guess my point is in the long run youd be better off getting a BA from a normal college and learning the sound industry on the side. There are plenty of bands/club in town looking for people to help out if your just looking for experience. Have you ever even ran a sound board/carted equipment around? I have and it is not as glorious as it sounds. Id say pay your dues in the industry and then think about going there to further yourself as an individual sort of like the icing on the cake. Its much better to have a solid universal base so that way you can keep your options open. Full sail is a great program but like most competiive schools that are the best at what they do, unless you have been eating, drinking, and sleeping the sound industry for a long time, and have the drive to be the top of your class full sail isnt going to do a whole lot for you. Besides get you a degree that is useless outside of one of the most competive industries.

Just my two cents, if you want any more info hit me up on aim. I know several people who go to full sail and have entertained the idea of going there myself.
