View Full Version : Needles, Ortofons in particular

Ok, so I shopped around for a good set of needles for a long time. I listened to everyone's opinion on which was the best. It seems I never found a needle that SOMEONE didn't have something negative to say about it. It either ate your records or it didn't track worth a shit or something.

Today I bought a pair of Ortofon Black's with two sets of tips - one is the standard "pro s" tip that's black with a red dot, and the others are the "night club" yellow tips. The black ones have a spherical needle and the yellow ones have an elliptical needle. The guy at guitar center said the elliptical needle is the best - being the one that is the most "middle ground" between tracking and not eating records. One big negative I've heard more than once about Ortofons is that the four prong contactor is never making a good connection because they are so short or that the needle is too heavy. If this is the case then why do so many DJ's use ortofons, or why doesn't ortofon redesign them, or why don't you just re-balance your tone arm [if you think it's too heavy].

So, if you spin, what kind of needles do you use? What good and bad have you heard about them? Which ones do you think are the best? And if you use ortofons, which tips do you like the best or think are the best? Why?

i use the ortophon black pro - s's with the pro-s black tips, and
...the four prong contactor is never making a good connection ..

seems to be my biggest probelm. it only ever happens on Techs, and only one of my cartridges doesnt seem to work, i either get low sound, or just one side of sound. Other than that, they work great. Luckily there has alwasy been back up needles to use when one isnt working properly.

Dax, there should already be a post in this forum about what needles people, use...

You know, I would be more worried about record burn than contact with the tone arm...

The only time I've ever had trouble with the connects on my Ortofon's was at the Globe on the rusty connects in the tonearm.

Only problem with M44's is they take a while to break in. Until they're broken in they do tend to skip a lot. I've heard of DJ's leaving the needle in the groove @ the end of the record running for days to get em nice. Despite this, the shures are definately the way to go...
